Divine Qualities of Shri Rama (part 2)

Shriram is known as a king of solar dynasty (Suryavanshi). Shriram was born as a complete representative of entire solar dynasty. Shri Rama was aware of his Jiva form and Turiya form but unaware of his God's form (that too for a purpose).

Because Lord Vishnus’s divine weapons present with him in the form of humans in Ramayan. Lord Ram is the complete human incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Laxman was the incarnation of Sheshnag and Maa Sita was the incarnation of MahaLaxmi.

Bharat was the personification of Sudarshan Chakra. Shaturgnha was the personification of Shankha (conch shell). Vibhishana was the personification of Gada (Mace).

A poorna avataar is the one where the avatar is full conscious, simultaneously about his Jiva form, his God form and his Turiya (Brahm) form. As per Valmiki Ramayan (VR); Shri Ram has all following kalas;

O illusioner! Shri Hari is lotus like mind of the sages! O great Randhir and invincible Shri Raghuveer! I worship you (take refuge in you) O Hari! I chant your name and salute you. You are the great medicine for the disease of birth and death and the enemy of pride.

Krishna was complete and that could be witnessed from his activities-he was a philosopher, politician, diplomat, warrior, yogi, lover, renunciant etc. etc. It is impossible for one person to possess all these and that too in totality.

Sri Rama's mission was to establish an ethical society and to teach people how to establish Dharma-rajya. So it's not that Rama was inferior but his purpose was limited to one aspect of life, namely how a king should be a raja-rishi and establish his kingdom based on dharma.

Shri Krishna's mission was diverse, it was multi-faceted. He descended to teach practically everything under the sun, from politics and diplomacy to the highest flights of Vedanta and yoga.

 So people say Krishna was purna-avatar not because he was superior to Ram (because they were both one and the same) but because his mission was integral and all-inclusive, one aspect is that Rama respected social duties to understand lets see the two aspects/ types of classifications of 16 Kalas of Shri Vishnu;

(1a)  Daya – Compassion

(2a)  Dharjya – Patience

(3a)  Kshama – Forgiveness

(4a)  Nyaya – Justice

(5a)  Nirapeksha – Impartiality

(6a)  Niraskata – Detachment

(7a)  Tapasya – Meditation / Spiritual Powers

(8a)  Aparchitta – Invincibility

(9a)  Danasheel – Bestower of all wealth

(10a)  Saundarjyamaya – Beauty Incarnate

(11a)  Nrityajna – Best of Dancers

(12a)  Sangitajna – Best of Singers

(13a)  Neetibadi – Embodiment of Honesty

(14a)  Satyabadi – Truth Itself

(15a)  Sarvagnata – Perfect master of all arts, such as poetry, drama, painting etc.

(16a)  Sarvaniyanta – Controller of All

And

1b) Annamaya – seed-born (food)

2b) Pranamaya – water-born (breath)

3b) Manomaya – egg-born (mind)

4b) Vigyanamaya – womb-born (intellect)

5b) Anandamaya – reborn (joy)

6b) Atishayini (Peace)

7b) Viparinabhini (Love)

8b) Sankramini (Creator)

9b) Prabhavi (potent, mighty)

10b) Kunthini (beyond pain or eternal)

11b) Vikasini (great)

12b) Maryadini (highly reverred)

13b) Sanhaladini (source of happiness)

14b) Ahladini (causing joy)

15b) Paripurna (Complete, perfect or full)

16b) Swarupavasthitha (established in self/form, Independent)

When He came to earth, Lord Rama had first 14 kalas but the last two were missing (Paripurna and Swarupavasthitha). Paripurna means complete knowledge of all forms of awakening. Swarupavasthitha means being established in his real true self. Why Rama had to hide two kalas?

Shri Ram as he was Maryada Purushottam, he when took birth on earth Lord Vishnu hide 2 kala's (recreation and maya) if you read Ramayana, you will never find Rama did any recreation or used maya. Ravana had got a boon that no God should kill him.

So, Vishnu had to come hiding two kalas and forgetting that He is the avatar of Vishnu. Lord Rama acted like a human, cried for Sita, Admired crossing the sea, etc. All this were done just to satisfy the boon got by Ravana.

Where as Shri Krishna belongs to lunar dynasty, born as a complete representative of entire lunar dynasty. Krishna born in “Ashtmi Rohini Nakshtra” in a very dark midnight. According to astro-science moon have 16 Kalas. That’s why Krishna is known as 16-Kala avtar (incarnation).

KALAS OF LIVING BEINGS AND MATERIALS

Stones – 1 kala

Water – 2 kalas

Fire – 3 kalas

Vayu – 4 kalas

Space (sky) – 5 kalas

Plants / Trees – 6 kalas

Animals – 7 kalas

Humans – 8 kalas.

Superhumans (extraordinary / Saint) – 9 kalas

A human body can not bear more than 9 kalas. Some saints have attained upto 9 kalas. There are Saptarshigana, Manu, Devta, Prajapati, Lokpal etc. with 9 arts. After this the manifestation of 10 and more than 10 arts is manifested only in the incarnations of the Lord.

Like Varaha, Narasimha, Kurma, Matsya and Vamana avatars. He is also called an incarnation of passion. Usually 10 to 11 arts are manifested in them. Parshuram has also been called the incarnation of God.

Kalas are like the spiritual level. That is why Hinduism is related to infinite spiritual growth. Srimad Bhagavatham (1-17-24) lists the four qualities essential for spiritual growth to be followed by every devotee if he likes to grow in devotion to Rama / Krishna: Mercy,  Cleanliness, Self-discipline and Truthfulness.

MERCY: A devotee sees Rama/Krishna in every living being.  So, he knows that if he hates anyone, he in fact hates his God. So, a devotee of Krishna should see everyone with mercy and show their forgiveness even to those who torture them.

A devotee does not know how to hate anyone or anything. He just sees whether this person or thing will help him to advance in devotion. If it is helpful, he adopts. If not, he just avoids it and does not hates it. He has understood that Krishna will not like if we do not show our mercy upon His  creations.

CLEANLINESS: A devotee should have inner and outer cleanliness. He is aware that Ram /Krishna is residing in His heart. So, he tries to keep his heart clean from pollutions of material attachments and he considers his heart as the temple of Krishna.

Only because of excessive material attachments, everyone has to sin. So, he is unable to focus on Krishna. So, a devotee keeps his heart clean. At the same time, he also keeps his body clean as this body is the temple where Krishna lives. So, he takes bath and keeps his Kaya too clean.

SELF DISCIPLINE: When a devotee knows that his body is not just the flesh pack, but a temple where Rama/Krishna lives as Paramathma, he starts to follow discipline in thoughts and actions not to pollute this temple of Krishna.

TRUTHFULNESS: A devotee should be honest to his heart and conscience. He does not do anything that is against anyone. He always speaks truth and he never go in wrong routes to achieve something.

A devotee will do what he says. He never backtracks. He is truthful to Ram/Krishna, his guru, vaishnavas, parents and the relatives. He is duty bound and finds pleasure in serving Krishna truthfully to please Krishna, not to please himself.

Why Shri Rama also called Maryada Purushottam ?

Lord Rama is the 7th avatar of Lord Vishnu  also known as Maryada Purushottam, which means the perfect man. It is to be noted that maryada means 'limit' and purushottama means 'the greater than the greatest man'. Purusha means 'man of honor'.

Shri  Rama stands as a beacon of virtue, wisdom, and righteousness. His life story, as depicted in the Ramayana of Valmiki, is replete with instances that exemplify the qualities of niti and dhṛti. These two virtues, often translated as guidance, conduct, firmness, and constancy, are the cornerstones of leadership that not only govern the interactions between individuals but also shape the very fabric of society.

The term niti, in its multifaceted meanings, encompasses the principles of guidance, wisdom, righteousness, and proper conduct. A true leader, one who embodies nitiman, cherishes and nurtures qualities that resonate with the core values of human existence. Patience, tolerance, truthfulness in thought, speech, and action, confidence, and benevolence are just a few threads in the rich field of virtues that define niti.

Lord Rama achieved success by controlling the situation even in adverse circumstances, he always followed the Vedas and Maryada. Because Rama is the embodiment of truth, he is the ideal son, the ideal husband, and the most important the ideal king. By compromising on his own pleasures, he supported justice and truth. Lord Rama is the paragon of virtues.

Brahm himself in the lap of mother Kaushalya;

Shri Rama appears and mother Kaushalya is feeling the ultimate bliss, protecting and nourishing the Brahm himself who feeds, protects and nourishes whole world. The unborn and the all-pervading Brahm (the supreme Absolute), who is Niranjan (detached from and untainted by Maya), who is Nirguna (beyond the three fold qualities of Sattva-Raj-Tam of Maya) and devoid of worldly-play, he alone being conquered by love and devotion (Prema-bhakti of Manu-Shatrupa) is playing in the arms (laps) of mother Kaushalya.

The Lord incarnated as a human being for the sake of Brahmins, cows, devas and sages. They (ignorant, malina) are beyond Maya and its qualities (Sat, Raja, Tama) and the (outer and inner) senses. His (divine) body is made of His own will (not by any karmic bondage by the triple material substances. Being conquered by the love and devotion (loving-devotion) of Manu-Shatrupa, that Brahm (the supreme Absolute) who is although unborn yet took birth from mother Kaushalya (incarnation of Shatrupa Ji);

Although he is all pervading (unlimited undivided formless whole), yet he shows transcendental-form as if limited with the body at certain place; although he is detached from Maya, yet appears with accompanying the Maya;  although he is unmanifest and Nirguna (beyond the attributes), yet he becomes Saguna manifest with all transcendental-attributes; although he being formless is devoid of play, yet he does various divine-plays like playing like a child in the lap of mother Kaushalya.

The akshara 'Ra' represents light or fire. That is why the Sun was called 'Ra' in many ancient cultures. This is not just the light of energy but also of knowledge, of enlightenment. The akshara 'Ma' represents the 'Mind' (manas).  ‘रा’ का अर्थ है आभा (कांति) और ‘म’ का अर्थ है मैं, मेरा और मैं स्वयं। राम का अर्थ है मेरे भीतर प्रकाश, मेरे ह्रदय में प्रकाश. Also extends to the self, (atma) and down to 'Man.'

'RAMA' therefore is the 'man in search of/ going towards the light, or, enlightenment; the atma towards the paramatma. In the Ramayana, Rama belongs to the Solar Dynasty / Suryavamshi so perhaps Rama - the 'Man of the Sun'. In the story 'Ramayana', the epic is a universal module of the 'Perfect man' (Purushothama) and his perfect way of life till he merges with the Supreme. Thus 'Rama Yana' ('yana' meaning 'the way') is the 'Way of Rama'.

In the phonetics/linguistic sciences of Sanskrit we do not have 'just' a sound. All sounds originate in a 'seed' sound (beeja mantra) which is represented linguistically in a language symbol (akshara), the combination known as beejakshara. Each of the aksharas come with a certain 'quality'. These qualities are supposed to originate, emerge and radiate out of the first primeval sound or vibration before all Creation.

The difference between chanting Ram as Naam mantra and Ram as the beeja mantra is Naada. Those of you who know the beeja of Ram, as well as possess basic knowledge of Sanskrit writing, will understand that the two are practically one.

The 'anuswara' at the end, being the Akshara-rupa of the Naada cannot be chanted by the uninitiated. But as per Sanskrit writing rules, the anuswara changes into a halanta-yukta Ma-kara (म्) when the word is at the end of a sentence (or if it is a single word).

Hence the Ram beeja remains the same, without the Naada. A Guru initiates you in the beeja of Ram mantra, after which you are eligible to chant practically the same mantra, but with the added benefit of Naada, which will aid your breath in sadhana.

Ram is therefore one such jewel among mantras. It gives the uninitiated bhakta the added benefit of chanting the same ekakshari beeja, enclosed only as Naam-rupa in plain sight. In Sanskrit, which is said to have been evolved from an even earlier 'Veda Bhasha' and scientifically perfected (therefore ‘Samskrtham’), meanings of aksharas, combinations thereof, and the extensions from the root akshara, spin out into the entire lexicon.

Etymologies in Sanskrit therefore tend to become complicated studies in themselves covering various aspects of the science of sound and language and then connotation. Thus Rama can also mean 'to be in bliss', in enlightenment etc.

Sitaji is Lakshmi and you are Lord Vishnu, the one with glowing dark complexion, who is the lord of all the subjects. You entered this world in human body only to kill Ravana.

She is Goddess Sita, the embodiment of all the Vedas, the embodiment of all the Gods, the equally pervasive in all the worlds, the illustrious, the embodiment of all religions, the soul of all living beings and all things. By the difference of the karma and guna of all beings, the embodiment of all bodies, the embodiment of human beings, sages and Gandharvas, the embodiment of all the universe, Mahalakshmi is integral to Lord Mahanarayana even though she is different.

‘There was a famous ancient city named Janakpur, in which Goddess Lakshmi as Sita Ji, the ocean of happiness, had appeared. There has never been a human being like Janak, nor will there be, nor is there; Whose daughter was Sakal Mangalyamayi Sita ji.

Lord Shiva, Brahmarsi Vasistha call Prabhu “Rama”;  Maharaj Dasarath calls him “Ramabhadra” (Rama who is most virtuous, gentle, lovely etc) with love;  Maharani Kaushalya kisses and smells the full-moon like face of her son and calls him “Ramachandra” some sages of Vedas call him “Vedhasa” (the supreme cause / creator of all (ऋग्वेदे ५.४३.१२ “आ वेधसं नीलपृष्ठं बृहन्तम् ), the subject (or devotees) of Prabhu call him Our Nath “Raghunath” (i.e. the Lord of all Jivas Raghus); Sita Ji calls him “Nath” (Mere Swami); and the Sakha-sakhis of Prabhu calls him “Sitapati” (the husband of Sita).

Ram Navami is the birth celebration of Prabhu Ram. According to the Hindu calendar, Ram Navami falls on the ninth day of the Chaitra month which is also the last day of Chaitra Navratri. As Durga Puja is generally celebrated in Basant, Shri Ram’s invocation and untimely worship of Maa Durga in autumn, is also called Akaal Bodhan. Akaal means ‘untimely’ and Bodhan means ‘invocation’. Since then our ancestors have been celebrating Durga Puja in this season too and today we are carrying this cultural legacy forward.

An illustration of Shri Ram invoking Maa Durga for blessings for victory in the war against Ravan in Lanka so that He could rescue Sita. Shri Ram decided to offer 108 rare Neel kamal (blue lotuses), but he could arrange only 107 at the time of invocation. His eyes were termed kamal nayan (shape of lotus), hence He decided to offer one of his eyes to make it 108. When Shri Ram picked up an arrow and about to pierce His eye, Mata Durga appeared and stopped him. Delighted at Shri Ram’s devotion, Mata Durga blessed Him.

When Rama was going to the forest, the major part of the population followed almost mad in his love. Lord Rama pleaded and requested them a lot to go back but he failed. Eventually he had to leave them while they were in deep slumber and went to the forest. It is said in the description of that time that even beasts and birds were under the spell of his love.

While coming back from Chitrakoot, Bharata was advised by Rama not to take into mind the doings of Mata Kaikeyi which she did propelled by desire or greed for kingdom. Your treatment towards her must be as a venerable mother deserves. He also instructed Satrughna swearing by his own self and Sita never to show anger to her and to serve her always. While in the forest Lakshman once criticised Kaikeyi, then Rama admonished him not to condemn her, this clearly shows what type of faith and devotion Rama had for his mothers.

Lord Siva replied (to Mother Parvati) with a smile, "There is no one enlightened or deluded. Man instantly becomes what Sri Raghunatha ( Lord Rama ) wills him to be at a particular moment". Hearing the verdict of Lord Siva that the name Rama' is as good as a thousand other names of God, Goddess Parvati repeats the Name continually along with Her consort.

If men repeat His Name even in a helpless state, sins committed by them in a series of previous existences are burnt away, while those who devoutly remember Him are able to cross the ocean of mundane existence as if it were a mere hollow made by the hoof of a cow (Ramacharitamanas).

Ram Navami signifies the arrival of divine power on the earth. It was the day when Bhagwan Vishnu was born as the elder son of Dasharath, the King of Ayodhya. On this day, the devotees of Prabhu Ram perform elaborate rituals. The Hindus believe that this holy bath purifies the body and soul. The purpose of the birth of Ram was to destroy the evil spirit of Ravana. Hence, the celebration of Ram Navami glorifies the power of religion, and it reflects the conflict between good and evil. A celebration of Ram Navami festival indicates the removal of negativity and rise of divine power on the earth.

To remove the Asura Tatwa from the earth and to maintain the Dharma, Bhagwan Vishnu was born as Shri Ram. The day of Ram Navami begins with the offering prayer to the Sun. The Sun symbolizes power. Sun is believed to be Prabhu Rama's ancestor. Hence, praying to the Sun at the beginning of that day to seek the blessing of supreme power is auspicious. Devotees of Shri Ram celebrate the day by singing the devotional song, listening recitations from religious books and chanting of Vedic hymns.

I bow repeatedly to Lord Shri Rama, the one who is most beautiful in the world, the one who wards off sorrow and gives wealth to devotees.

Chariot procession is an indispensable part of Ram Navami festival. The devotees place the images of Shri Ram, Mata Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman in a decorated chariot and carry out a procession on the streets. Preachers also preach sermons from religious texts. All of these practices make people aware about the difference between right and wrong. Followers of Shri Ram keep a fast for the whole day. It helps to purify body system.
